Answers

1) What stood out in this article to me as a new teacher candidate in Vancouver in 2019 how it was able to provide general guidelines for being a reflective teacher. I believe that the moral characteristics of a reflective teacher: openmindedness, responsible, and wholeheartness, are timeless ideals for not just teachers, but people. So, I do not believe that the time and place this article was written in has much to contribute to the message behind the article. The message being the importance of being a reflective teacher.

However, the authors cautioned that although it is important to be a reflective teacher, it may not always be possible due to time constraints. They had expressed that the nature of classroom life is fast-paced and unpredictable (p. 108) but I believe that this is much more extreme in today's age. With developments in technology, research into different classroom resources and government policies require teachers to be adaptive at an accelerated rate. Although I feel anxious about these external teaching demands, I am excited about the opportunity to learn and develop as a teacher throughout my career in consideration of the future's changing landscape.

2) Throughout this Teacher Education Program, we are stressed about the importance of being a reflective teacher. Reflection is an important skill to have and this article outlines some characteristics of a reflective teacher. These characteristics give me some insight into some personal guidelines I can follow to inquire into ways I can improve and think critically about how my teaching targets different mathematical skills of my students'.

By being openminded in my teaching, I can better empathize with my students to reveal areas where they may be struggling in. I also believe that openmindedness and approachability come are characteristics that come hand-in-hand as someone who has observed teachers I consider great. Teachers I have had who have demonstrated openmindedness I perceived as being approachable which greatly benefited me when I struggled with materials. This along with their apparent wholeheartness made me feel capable despite not understanding materials initially. I think that teachers have great responsibility in being able to portray themselves in this light for the benefit of their students.
