Inquiry Project Idea
Description:
Using board games to promote and develop educational skills has always been historically significant (Hinebaugh, 2009). In fact, board games have been used as education tools since their inception in Ancient Civilizations. Specifically, most board games are based on some mathematical foundation around their board configurations, how they employ strategy and logic, and the implementation of deductive reasoning. As teacher candidates, we feel that these are all important mathematical skills for students to develop.
Additionally, we are also big board game nerds who enjoy the hobby and feel that they are fun stress relievers, they’re competitive, and they help connect you to others. We feel that bringing board games into the classroom can create a more social and connected learning environment. Through this, they believe board games can develop critical thinking strategies in students.
In this inquiry project we will explore ways to use board games to teach math, how to develop math skills, and ways to use the techniques for invoking flow in games to math learning.
Log line: How to use board games to teach math and math skills effectively.
